Chrysler recall postcard in the mail- just a ploy to get people into the shop?

Mamacita asked:

I received in the mail a postcard about my car having a product recall and the name of a local Chrysler shop to get the item replaced free of charge. Is this some ploy to get people into the garage so they can find other “problems” with the car or is this legit?
Hmm, true but the last thing people want to hear is a bunch of other problems with the car and it seems every time there’s a list of issues.

I have a Chrysler 300C with me. While I love the car it gives me about 18miles/gallon on city roads and about 21 on freeways. I was looking at Chrysler Aspen coming out with Hybrid this fall and was wondering about its mileage to a gallon. Also any advice on alternative options would be useful. I am looking to going more green and saving on gas.

Hot Bidder Supplies Energy Drink to Chrysler Workers

June 28th, 2010
chrysler GM
Lauren Woods asked:

Frank Stronach, the Canadian auto-parts mogul and founder of Magna International Inc., has just the drink to pep up haggard employees in Auburn Hills. This is the mogul’s way of playing it cool with the rising heat in the battle to acquire the recuperating American division of DaimlerChrysler AG.

In 2006, the Canadian mogul, tagged as one of the hot bidders for the Chrysler Group, lent his name to Frank’s Energy Drink which is a super-caffeinated beverage. The franksenergy.com website describes the energy drink as the one that “keeps you yodeling all night long.” The fruity, vitamin-laced energy drink is the invention of two young entrepreneurs from Stronach’s native Austria. It is priced at about $1 a can in Canadian grocery chains and pizzerias. Is your auto company tired, listless and in need of “authentic Austrian energy?”

Frank’s is especially formulated to cater to the young males needs who can join an online contest for a night on the town in “Frank’s Energy Limo” with the “Energy Girls” - a cheerful crew of leggy blondes with braided hair and obviously healthy physiques.

A smiling Stronach, who is heading Magna’s effort to buy Chrysler from German automaker DaimlerChrysler AG, is featured on the Web site along with the official “Frank’s” motto - “Fun. Fame. Fortune. And really comfortable lederhosen.” According to the energy drink’s advertisement campaign, “Frank’s Energy Drink Kicks Butt,” Gene Simmons of the rock band Kiss, is one of the passionate endorsers of the drink.

Providing Frank’s workers with energy drink is like delivering chilling breeze from the APC cold air intake. It is Stronach’s way of playing it cool. The heat is on in Auburn Hills and the automotive industry in general. And a breeze of refreshing air is necessary to soothe the plight. Earlier, the Bush Administration has named a new manufacturing czar. Analysts in the industry said that he is certainly not full of hot air.

After leaving the post open for over three months, the Commerce Department named retired Rear Adm. William “Woody” Sutton as the new assistant secretary for manufacturing and services. But the appointment is still to be confirmed by the Senate.

It can be recalled that Al Frink left as manufacturing czar in December, one month before the Democrats took power in Congress. Frink was the first to hold the post that President Bush created during the 2004 campaign. The said post is in response to the condemnation that too many American manufacturing jobs had radically perished. The said subject is not new to Sutton.

Until February, Frink was president of the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute, a trade group representing manufacturers of over 90 percent of North American-produced central air conditioning and commercial refrigeration equipment. Air conditioner manufacturers have experienced bumpy rides in the previous years, closing several major American factories and moving production abroad. Since 2000, America has lost about three million manufacturing jobs, and the state of Michigan has lost most amid a radical downsizing of the American auto industry.

An analyst stressed, “But we can hear Bush now: “You’re doing a helluva job, Woody!” Did he make the wrong call?” He added, “Was GM’s Paul Ballew, in his monthly conference call with analysts and reporters, trying to deflect attention from the automakers’ down sales month or just striking a blow for marital bliss?”

In a phone interview with Ballew, he queried: “Do you have to get that, Rod?,” referring to Lache, analyst at Wall Street. “No, I don’t,” Lache answered. “It’s my wife.” “Um, Rod, maybe you better take that,” Ballew said. But Lache declined to take the advice.

Gm’s Oshawa Plant Tops Productivity List

June 27th, 2010
chrysler GM
Lauren Woods asked:

The Toyota Motor Corp. led all North American automakers in manufacturing productivity last year, but Detroit’s Big Three continued to close the productivity gap with their Japanese rivals, said The Harbour Report, a study watched closely by the auto industry.

The annual report prepared by Troy, Mich.-based Harbour Consulting, compared labor productivity at six companies that have North American plants. The study covered the installation of auto equipment and integration of parts and accessories like the Jet Chips cold air intake. The General Motors Corp. had four of the top ten most productive vehicle assembly plants, including the most productive plant in the study - Oshawa No. 2 in Oshawa, Ont. It took Toyota 29.93 work hours to manufacture components and assemble each vehicle.

“Topping the Harbour Report is a great achievement at a time when productivity is a critical challenge facing Canada’s economy,” said Arturo Elias, the GM Canada president. “This really shows what can be accomplished with constant focus and it is a testament to our great employees at GM Canada.”

Harbour Consulting president Ron Harbour said that the difference between the most and least productive companies last year was 5.17 hours, more than two hours better than the 7.33-hour gap in 2005. Yet the gap still is equal to about $300 per vehicle in favour of Toyota, the study said.

The productivity gain came because Toyota’s performance declined while the Detroit Three continued to increase. Ford and GM became more productive by slashing thousands of workers through buyouts and early retirement offers, and all three continued to work with unions to negotiate away work rules that place them at a disadvantage to the Japanese companies, Harbour said.

The improvements came even though sales and production declined for all three Detroit automakers, he said. “I think it’s a major point that Ford, Chrysler and GM all made improvements despite the fact that they all had some significant drops in volume,” he said. “When you’re losing production volume that fast, it’s pretty hard to make productivity improvements.”

Ford, GM and Chrysler could narrow the gap even further in 2007, because they did not fully realize the full impact of productivity improvements in 2006, Harbour said. “One of them could even overtake Toyota if production volumes don’t drop too much. We should see a big improvement in the Big Three’s numbers overall in 2007.”

Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s vice president of North American manufacturing, said that although his company is behind competitors, it has seen five straight years of productivity improvements. “Our rate of improvement was better than some,” Hinrichs said. He added that Ford has worked with union leaders on forging agreements to make plants more efficient. That includes allowing workers to do multiple jobs and contracting out traditional union jobs to save money.

Harbour said that such agreements are a necessity as the Detroit Three try to return to profitability. According to the study, Ford lost US$5,234 per vehicle before taxes last year, followed by GM with a $1,436 loss and DaimlerChrysler, which lost $1,072 per vehicle. On the contrary, Toyota made $1,266 per vehicle, while Honda made $1,368 and Nissan made $1,575. While Harbour gives the United Auto Workers and Canadian Auto Workers credit for helping the Detroit Three reduce costs, he said more must be done in the upcoming U.S. national contract talks. He added, “They have really come to the party here and made some really big improvements. But there are still some things out there.”

The Detroit Three have to erase productivity differences at any cost because their viability depends on it, Harbour said.
